Held at the Caltech Young Health Center, Dr. John Tsai hosted a group of MEDLIFE club members on a Sunday afternoon. After teaching them the basics of wound care and suturing technique, our students got the chance to use real surgical equipment to attempt to suture up a pork-belly model of a patient.
At the end of the suturing tutorial, Tsai hosted a friendly competition between the new surgeon-students, in which everyone was given 15 minutes to suture a practice incision. Participants were judged based on style, aesthetics, quality, and overall suture technique. At the end, it was freshman Mei Yi You (c/o 2022) who walked away victorious with a $5 gift card!

Sponsored by the Student-Faculty Programs (SFP) Office, DISCOVER BIO at Caltech was an event designed to expose high school students to the world of biological and biomedical research at one of the leading research institutions in the world. High school students participated in two lab tours led by Caltech undergraduates, exposing them to the environment and culture of research on campus. They also had the opportunity to hear presentations on their individual research at the end of the tour as well.
At the conclusion of the event, attendees had the opportunity to interact with current Caltech undergraduate students, and learned more about college life and the merits of pursuing a career in STEM. Discover Bio featured keynote speaker Alok Joglekar, postdoctoral fellow from the lab of David Baltimore.
