Clinical Volunteering with Purpose
Clinical volunteering is a great way to give back to the community while learning about what goes on in the hospital at the same time!
What is Huntington Hospital?
Huntington is a private community hospital in Pasadena about 3 miles west from Caltech campus. It is about a 10 minute drive from school.
What volunteer opportunities are available?
Clerical work, patient relations, nursing stations, information desk management... the list goes on. You could even work with therapy animals! With so many choices, make sure to find a position that matches your interests. A comprehensive list of role descriptions is linked here.
Time commitment for at least 6 months to remain an active volunteer. We recommend volunteering 2 (or more) hours every weekend, or 4 hours biweekly.
How do I find a volunteer buddy?
Giving back is always more fun in groups! Medlife maintains a regularly updated Google sheet so you know who will be volunteering every week, and we'll help coordinate everyone that wants to work together. It's a great way to coordinate volunteer efforts, share an Uber, and meet a friend!
Sounds awesome! How do I get started?
Everyone that's interested must individually apply to become a volunteer via the Huntington Hospital website. The online application form takes about 15 minutes to complete. After you submit the application, expect a phone call within two weeks from a volunteer supervisor from Huntington Hospital to discuss your application and next steps.
Huntington Hospital has a strict dress code. Make sure to have comfortable, light-colored slacks and closed-toed walking shoes before your first day. Make sure to ask the volunteer supervisor about the specific dress policy for the particular position you're assigned to.
Every volunteer is required to provide evidence of a negative two-step TB tests. TB tests are often offered at drug store clinics like at CVS, but often cost upwards of $30 per TB test. We recommend you make an appointment at the Caltech Student Health Center, which offers TB tests for free.
Are there shadowing opportunities at Huntington?
Medlife does not coordinate or offer shadowing opportunities at Huntington Hospital. Please reach out to Caltech's Pre-Health Advisor, James Berk, at jberk [at] caltech [dot] edu to learn more about potential clinical shadowing preceptorships.
I still have questions! Who can I contact?
